Wellbeing

At Westport Veterinary Clinic, we actively demonstrate that we care about the health and wellbeing of our people in the following ways:

Open-door culture: Team members are encouraged to speak openly about challenges—whether clinical, emotional, or personal—with management and each other. No judgment, just support.

Mental health support: Access to mental health resources (e.g. counselling helplines, Vetlife) is shared and promoted. We also check in with each other regularly, especially after tough cases or stressful shifts.

Fair rotas & breaks: We protect lunch breaks, aim to rotate weekend/ooh cover fairly, and make sure workloads are manageable. Nobody should burn out in a caring profession.

Physical wellbeing: Staff have access to PPE that fits and works, ergonomic equipment, and where possible, we tailor tasks to reduce strain or repetitive injuries. We also encourage movement—because let’s face it, sitting for 8 hours isn’t our thing.

Celebrating wins & supporting losses: We cheer for team successes (with snacks, obviously) and rally round when someone’s having a hard time—because this team’s got heart.

Training & growth: Ongoing CPD is supported to keep people feeling confident and capable—not stuck or stagnant.

Flexible support: Where possible, we adapt to life’s curveballs—whether that’s time off for family emergencies, phased returns, or just an extra hand when the wheels fall off.
Wellbeing champions
Within the practice, we take the physical and mental health of our team very seriously. We have 3 Mental Health First Aiders across the sites, and have an Employee Assistance Programme available for the whole team.
Throughout the year we have wellness days whether it is Indian Head or back massages from our local therapist, or "Fresh Fruit Friday", or our "Tea & Talk" moments, where the team know they can sit and have a chat with someone, when they need it.

Wellbeing initiatives
We achieved Disability Confident accreditation in July 2023.
Disability Confident is creating a movement of change, encouraging employers to think differently about disability and take action to improve how we recruit, retain and develop disabled people. Being Disability Confident is a unique opportunity to lead the way in our community, and hopefully we might just discover someone your business cannot do without.
