World Blood Donor Day

It’s World Blood Donor Day (14 June). How can your dog’s blood help?

Blood is so important and not just to people, it is vital to animal welfare too. As people we give blood but did you know that dogs can give blood too? Sick and injured dogs can need blood transfusions and a transfusion can be the difference between life and death.

The need for donations is always there and your dog could really make difference to another beloved pet, actually multiple beloved pets. Each donation from a dog can help save the lives of up to four other dogs, and they can donate blood up to six times a year.

Could your beloved animal help?

For your dog to be a blood donor, there are some criteria that they need to meet which are lister

Below:

  • Fit and healthy
  • Between one and eight years old
  • Weigh more than 25kg
  • Have a good temperament
  • Have never traveled outside of the UK and Ireland
  • Vaccinated, or have annual titre testing after their first booster
  • Not on any medication
