Endoscopy Course with Becky

Becky, one of our vets with the Westport24 Out of Hours team, recently attended a gastrointestinal endoscopy course.

Endoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure which allows us to directly examine the stomach and intestines with a camera, and to take biopsies or remove foreign objects which cannot be removed by inducing vomiting.

For some unknown reason, Becky’s own dog once thought it was a good idea to eat a sharp piece of wire and at the time, Becky worked at a practice which, unlike Westport, did not have their own endoscope, so she had to take him to the vet school in the middle of the night to have the wire removed. Therefore, Becky was very excited when she joined the Westport team to learn that she will now have access to an endoscope herself, and consequently went on this course to learn some tips and tricks.

How do you ethically practice removing foreign objects from a stomach I hear you ask? With a paper-mache stomach filled with all sorts of nonsense of course! It turns out some objects are more fiddly than others to grab with what resembles a miniature version of one of those claw machines you typically find in an arcade.

Becky now looks forward to meeting the next dog which thinks it’s a good idea to eat a piece of wire (or battery, cocktail stick or whatever else they can come up with) in the middle of the night!
