Endometriosis in the Workplace
RVN Lauren recently spent the day in Westminster with MPs and other businesses to highlight the importance of the Endometriosis in the Workplace report that was published last week.
On Wednesday 14th October, the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Endometriosis launched its new report on endometriosis in the workplace at an event in UK Parliament.
EndometriosisUK said:
"The report's findings show that we are not only losing talent in the workforce, but leaving those with endometriosis facing lost income, financial insecurity and additional financial burden."
The employee survey which forms the basis of much of this report received 6,239 responses. 90% had taken time off because of endometriosis, while 55% had used annual leave instead of sick leave. 47% had lost income and 40% had experienced financial hardship. When asked to consider the previous six months, 36% reported working in severe pain at least several days each week.
Lauren said:
"I'm very grateful for the invitation to Westminster and to hear the findings of the enquiry. The report published highlights the importance for further support and awareness in the work environment. The statistics speak for themselves and change needs to happen. Being in a room with passionate and like minded people was inspiring and hopefully we will see change across the country!
Westport Vets were the first veterinary practice to join the Endometriosis Friendly Employer Scheme and we continue to support our colleagues within practice. Hopefully we can continue to set examples for other workplaces in both the veterinary world and beyond!"

Through the scheme, Endometriosis UK provides guidance for employers on how to support employees with endometriosis and menstrual health conditions, and work towards improving the work environment.
Westport Vets Endometriosis Friendly Employer status has also been renewed for another 2 years!
What is endometriosis?
Endometriosis occurs when cells similar to the ones in the lining of the womb (uterus) are found elsewhere in the body.
These cells can grow and change in response to hormones in the menstrual cycle, causing inflammation, pain and scar tissue. Endometriosis is most commonly found on the lining of the pelvis (peritoneum) and may involve the ovaries and other pelvic organs, such as the bowel or bladder. Less commonly, endometriosis can also be found outside the pelvis, such as in the chest.
