Core Cognition CPD with Hannah R

We recently held a CPD on Sunday in January which was focusing around Performance Under Pressure with Dr Stephen Hearns.

Stephen is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine and is the lead consultant for Scotland’s Emergency Medical Retrieval Service - so it’s fair to say that he’s had to face a lot of high pressure situations.

There were 21 in total and we had full room discussions and also split up into 3 smaller groups of 7 so that we could have more focused discussions. I think we had the more diverse group in the room with 4 vets, a nurse, a receptionist and an animal care assistant - so we were all able to bring different moments that we have found to be stressful and how we worked through them, and then areas where other members of the team might not have thought the way we did in a situation. It was wonderful to talk through with people and see how other people think.

The part I was looking forward to the most was working with cognitive aids, and how to use them better in the workplace to allow yourself more mental thinking space for emergency situations. Thanks to this moment in the CPD, I’ve started writing things down that I need to do throughout the day and week, and then I can see them all in front of me rather than forgetting or muddling up my priorities.

I found the entire day really interesting and I feel like I’m able to take away a lot of information from it which I can then apply to my everyday life and work life.
