Association of Soft Tissue Veterinary Surgeons Spring Conference with Matthew

Matthew recently attended the Association of Soft Tissue Veterinary Surgeons conference, held at the beautiful University of Cambridge.

As an advanced practitioner in small animal surgery, Matthew holds additional training and qualifications in surgery with a specific interest in soft tissue surgery (anything that isn’t bones). Part of maintaining this status is a commitment to staying up to date with advances in the field such that this knowledge can directly benefit your pet.

This event brought together veterinary specialists from across the country to share the latest research, techniques, and ideas in soft tissue surgery—particularly focusing on conditions affecting the chest and airways.

Some of the key topics discussed included updates in the treatment of Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS), a condition commonly seen in flat-faced breeds such as Bulldogs, Frenchies and Pugs. There were also valuable insights into cancers affecting the respiratory system, advances in managing tracheal collapse, and new approaches to complex procedures such as diaphragmatic surgery.

In addition, a number of recent scientific studies were reviewed, along with discussions around more unusual surgical cases affecting brachycephalic patients.

Beyond the lecture hall, the conference also provided a fantastic opportunity to exchange ideas with other experienced surgeons—all in the glorious weather and surroundings of Churchill College Cambridge!

Attending events like this allows us to bring the very latest knowledge and techniques back to our practice. For you, this means continued confidence that your pet is receiving care informed by up-to-date research and the highest clinical standards.
